AN SOI MODEL SCHOOL WILL INSURE THAT EVERY STUDENT HAS THE ABILITIES TO LEARN TO HIS OR HER CAPACITY.
SOI Systems is concerned with every student’s ability to learn. The SOI Model School will prepare students to learn. It will correct learning disabilities. It will stretch students in areas not exercised by the standard curriculum.
The SOI Model School is compatible with any curriculum or any training structure. SOI is concerned with how and how well students learn. Curriculum and training is concerned with what students learn. The “how” of SOI is compatible with the “what” of any curriculum or training program.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
STRUCTURE OF INTELLECT
For about 15 minutes daily during the middle seven months of the school year, all students undertake SOI activities that develop the mental abilities which teachers assume each student brings to the classroom; e.g., attention span, memory and recall, process orientation, symbol decoding, contextual comprehension, etc.
Approximately one to two abilities are taught each month so, in the course of a year, the students will have experienced approximately ten to twelve learning abilities. There is also selected emphasis on advanced cognitive abilities - creativity, Evaluation, Systems, Transformations and Implications - which are required for critical thinking tasks.
The students are taught from SOI workbooks, which are articulated in difficulty through eight to twelve activities per learning ability.
INTEGRATED PRACTICE PROTOCOL
The IPP facility is staffed by a specialist, who may be assisted by an aide, depending upon the school’s enrollment. These are school personnel who have been trained to do SOI and IPP learning diagnostics and treatment.
Students are referred to the IPP Center primarily by classroom teachers, but counselors, psychologists, coordinators, and administrators are also sources of referral. Students in grades 3-6 are assessed in terms of cognitive abilities, perceptual skills, and sensory integration. After these assessments, problems are diagnosed, treatment plans are produced, and treatment is provided. K-2 students participate in a group treatment plan.
PERSONAL CAREER EVALUATION
Secondary and adult students receive career awareness/counseling based on their individual cognitive profiles. The learning and thinking profiles of over 100 careers and vocations are compared to the students’ profiles. Students increase occupational potential by developing SOI and IPP abilities. Post-secondary planning is, therefore, more realistic because it is based on scientific data.
The SOI Model School is implemented within the school district to provide all of the necessary materials, training, staff development, and the consultation for a complete program.
